Guitarist & songwriter Scott Gorham spoke with journalist Tony Conley of Rock Guitar Daily prior to BLACK STAR RIDERS’ recent performance in Sacramento, California. The conversation covered the debut release All Hell Breaks Loose, rhythm guitar playing, Gorham’s current & former gear & band mates, Thin Lizzy, and of course, the band’s new album.
“We’re just trying out wings out here in America to see how the BLACK STAR RIDERS name goes down,” shared Gorham. “That’s why you come out here and do these things. [Y]ou have to get out there and take some hard knocks. It’s a big country. I think we kind of have a point to prove here. We want to get away from the twelve day [recording process] thing, just to see what we can do given the chance to go in and make a proper album – the way we were used to making albums, right? . . . I’ve got a fair few things that I’ve been working on for the last few months. Riffs, chord patterns and all of that. So yeah, we’ll be ready by the time we get in [the studio].”
“It was especially worth noting,” writes Conley, “that I stood almost directly in front of Gorham at the show, and when he made a point with his playing or something someone in the band did that proved a point he had made earlier, he’d give me a glance that said both, ‘See?’ and ‘Did you get that? That’s what I was talking about.’ His hard work, efforts, and his striving to still up his game at 63 are inspiring.”
